Terminology
There are some terms useful to the reader in understanding concepts relating to varicose veins.
- Venous System.
Veins carry blood back from the peripheries, including the hands, feet and head, back to the heart
Veins are thin wall vessels that carry blood under low pressure.
- Arterial System
Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the peripheries
An artery is a thick walled vessel as it carries high pressure blood.
- Deep Veins
These are veins carry the majority of blood back from the legs.
These veins are located deep within the muscles
Deep veins are involved when Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs.
- Superficial Veins
- These veins are located just under the skin, and are superficial to the underlying fascia and muscles.
- The Long Saphenous Vein runs from the ankle to the groin.
- The Short Saphenous Vein runs from the posterir ankle to the back of the knee.
